Installation - VMWare
This section describes how to install VMWare on your host environment in order to launch Maemo SDK virtual images. The instructions were properly tested on Linux, Windows and Mac platforms.

Installing VMWare on Linux

Download


VMWare provides a free product to run virtual machines on Linux: the VMPlayer. With it, you can run any of Maemo SDK virtual machines. In order to download it, you have to access its website.



For Linux platform, the installer is available under different formats (.rpm, .tar.gz or .bundle). We used the .bundle format. Download the file on your machine.



Installation

1. Open a terminal and execute the following commands:

$ chmod a+x VMWare-Player-2.5.2-156735.i386.bundle

$ sudo sh VMWare-Player-2.5.2-156735.i386.bundle

The installer starts the VMPlayer wizard


 
2. Follow the instructions of VMPlayer installer wizard






3. On Ubuntu, VMPlayer  launcher is available on System Tools submenu


4. Then, start VMPlayer in order to run your Maemo SDK virtual machine

You can also run the virtual image on VMPlayer tools with command-line interface.

Usage

VMWare virtual machines are configured through .vmx description files. Maemo SDK Virtual Images project provides .vmx files for each virtual machine available. 

1. In order to run any Maemo SDK virtual image, click on Open an existent Virtual Machine button on VMPlayer main page.


2. Select the the .vmx of your virtual machine. 

3. The virtual machine will be automatically launched.





Installing VMWare on Windows

Download

VMWare provides a free product to run virtual machines: the VMPlayer. With it, you can run any of Maemo SDK virtual machines. In order to download it, you have to access its website.



Download the installer on your machine.



Installation

1. Double-click on VMPlayer installer.


 
2. Follow the instructions of VMPlayer installer wizard.






3. Then, start VMPlayer in order to run your Maemo SDK virtual machine.

You can also run the virtual image on VMPlayer tools with command-line interface.

Installing VMWare on Mac

Download

Unfurtunally, VMWare does not provides any free product to run virtual machines on Mac OS. In this document, we describe how to install VMWare Fusion, a virtualization tool often used for Mac. VMWare Fusion is not free, but you can get the free trial for 30 days. With it, you can run any Maemo SDK virtual machines on your Mac. In order to download it, you have to access its website.

Download the installer on your machine

Installation

1. On main page of VMWare Fusion installer file, click on Install VMWare Fusion.


2. Follow the instructions of VMWare Fusion installer wizard.

3. Then, start VMWare Fusion in order to run your Maemo SDK virtual machine.


Usage

VMWare virtual machines are configured through .vmx description files. Maemo SDK Virtual Images project provides .vmx files for each virtual machine available. 

1. In order to run any Maemo SDK virtual image, click on Open button on VMWare Fusion main page.


2. Select the .vmx of your virtual machine.

This release provides 2 different virtual images with Maemo SDK installed: an image with Ubuntu Server Intrepid Ibex and an image with Ubuntu Desktop Intrepid Ibex.
